Whether you are moving, sending a gift, or preparing items for storage, it is so important to package your things properly to ensure they are protected and arrive safely.
Choosing the correct packaging is not a great mystery. But there are some things you must take into consideration. Of course, it depends on the items you are packaging. Glassware, china, paintings, and clothing all have different requirements. Heavy items need stronger packaging than lighter ones. So you should choose your packing materials accordingly.
If you are using boxes be aware that there are boxes made especially for fragile items. Strong, corrugated boxes should be used for these items. This holds true for heavy items. Always get a box bigger than the items you are packing, to leave room for padding and cushioning. Reusing boxes may save you in the pocket and make you feel environmentally friendly, but it could put the items at risk. If you are going to reuse a box, check the flaps and seams, as well as the edges of the box. Be sure that prior logos, mailing instructions, and addresses are completely blocked out by using a marker or taping a paper bag over the lettering.
As for cushioning and padding, there are some choices. Pick something that will fill the box and offer optimum protection for all items. You should be sure that fragile items have at least 3 inches of padding. For cushioning you can use foam peanuts, rolled newspaper, or the popcorn pieces. Fragile items should also be wrapped individually with bubble wrap or foam pockets. Make sure that everything in the box is secure by shaking it gently. If you hear or feel any movement, you need more padding.
The type of tape you use to seal your packages is as important and also contributes to items’ protection. Never use cellophane tape or masking tape, staples or string. The postal service will not accept them. If you must use staples, tape over them so they are not exposed. A good, wide plastic tape that has reinforced nylon or is pressure sensitive is best. Tape your package tightly.
Choosing the right packaging materials will give you a sense of security and the knowledge that your items will be safe and protected.
